Visually, feathers are one of those oddly enchanting objects in the world that has such a unique beauty. Perhaps it only seems like that to an artist but takes a look at all the feathers out there! The softness, range of colors, functionality, variety, and texture all make for a cool drawing challenge. Let's get started on drawing this beautiful blue feather step by step! Honestly, I'm not sure what real bird this belongs to, I just imagined a flying winged pegasus.

🎨 Parents:The only tools you need to use these how-to-draw tutorials are: an eraser, a pencil, and a piece of paper. But – if you have them around – a sketching pencil makes for fainter and softer lines that help kids build fine motor accuracy. I also recommend going over the sketch pencil with a black outline marker when you're done for a neater finish. Lastly, erase the pencil marks before adding color.
Step-by-Step Guide on How To Draw a Feather
- Draw a diagonal, long, and narrow triangular rachis (center of the feather). Note: The rachis should be more narrow on top that the lines are nearly touching each other.
- Then, perpendicular to each side of the rachis, draw two rectangular shape groups of feathers with different widths. Make sure to leave enough space below the feathers for the quill.
- Next, draw another rectangular shape group of feathers on the right side of the rachis. After that, draw another one on the left side, but this time extend it to the right side, forming a triangular, pointy, and sharp feather end on top.
- Now that we have the final piece of a feather let's color it with four different shades of blue – the lightest shade on the rachis, then on the top two groups of a feather, a darker one on the third, and the darkest on the fourth.

- Birds are the only animals with feathers and plumage, this makes them completely unique in the animal kingdom.
- In order to fly, birds have very very light skeletons. In some species, their skeleton represents just 5% of their body weight which means feathers make up a large portion of their weight.
- Bird feathers on the outside are called vaned feathers which have a stiff center and soft barbs on the side. The center feather is called a quill called pennaceous (= like a pen).
- Feathers give a bird its color. And birds need this coloring for camouflage, attracting mates, and defending their territory.
- People;e used quills in the past as pens.
- Down is still a popular stuffing for pillows, cushions, mattresses, and decorations. Down is from a very young bird that needs down to keep warm but can't help with flight (they're too young to fly anyways.)
